New brochure on patent issues for researchers published by the EPO and the European Commission

19 February 2008
Researchers usually have indepth knowledge about the technical literature within their area of specialisation. However many researchers are not aware that there is a wealth of information stored in the patent literature and it is all too frequently overlooked. This storehouse of information can be invaluable in not only assessing technical issues but also provides insights with respect to whether the proposed research might have a commercial outcome. This recent article entitled "Why researchers should care about patents" and published by the European Patent Office is a quick guide for researchers that covers these and other issues of direct relevance to researchers in both the public and private sectors.

The European Patent Office and European Commission have published a brochure entitled "Why researchers shoudl care about patents".  It aims to summarise the main considerations when conducting patent research, particularly before the commencement of an R&D project.  The brochure, released in January 2008, provides information on how to search patent literature, when to consider patenting an R&D project, and the importance of respecting third parties' rights when patenting.
