Meet keen cyclist Mark Summerfield. He’s also into good food, optical fibres and Tarantino films.

“My creative outlet is cooking with unusual ingredients and trying new and innovative techniques. Maybe that’s why I like tapping into the same sort of curiosity and inventiveness in my clients. I have the good fortune to work with clients in leading-edge high-technology fields, but I also enjoy the variety of advising on a wide range of IP issues.”

I AM: A creative thinker

Title: Senior Associate, Patent and Trade Marks Attorney

Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Honours) PhD, Masters of Intellectual Property Law

My original undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering at Melbourne University. After two years working at Telecom’s (now Telstra) Research Laboratories I returned to Melbourne University to pursue my PhD in the area of optical fibre communications systems. Subsequently I worked in a number of university and commercial research and development roles relating to telecommunications systems, software applications, numerical computation and digital signal processing. In these roles, I became increasingly involved in the management of intellectual property. I was interested by the interplay between legal, technical and commercial issues involved in the protection and management of intellectual property, as well as the in the variety of work and clients with which patent attorneys are involved. This ultimately led to my decision to join the profession.
